Etomidate is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic, also called Amidate, developed at Janssen Pharmaceuticals in 1964 and later became used in medicine in the EU since 1972 and in the USA since 1983.
This drug is used for short procedures for the induction of general anesthesia and sedation, for example, for the reduction of sutures, electroconvulsive therapy, tracheal intubation. Etomidate is used in medicine as a sedative-hypnotic agent, for sedation of consciousness and causing anesthesia, has a rapid onset of action and a safe cardiovascular risk profile, since it does not rapidly lower blood pressure. It is used due to the lack of histamine release and protection from myocardial ischemia, brain, as it reduces intracranial pressure. Historically, this drug has been used in the United States as one of the drugs for execution. Regular and continuous intravenous administration of etomidate leads to adrenocortical dysfunction. Etomidate is often used for traumatic brain injuries. Of the side effects after injections, burning is possible.
Etomidate acts on GABA receptors containing β2 and β3 subunits, which are involved in anesthetic and sedative action.
